Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Answers to the questions we hear most often from students and families navigating US college admissions.

What is the difference between Early Decision and Early Action? +
Early Decision (ED) is a binding agreement — if admitted, you must enroll and withdraw all other applications. It is best used only for your absolute top-choice school. Early Action (EA) is non-binding: you receive your decision early (usually December) but have until May 1 to make your final enrollment decision. Both typically share a November 1–15 application deadline.
What does rolling admissions mean and is it better to apply early? +
Rolling admissions means the college reviews applications as they are received — there is no single deadline. Decisions are issued within 4–6 weeks of a complete application. Yes: applying early in a rolling admissions cycle is strongly recommended, as seats and financial aid are awarded on a first-come, first-served basis. The earlier you apply, the more options you will have.
How do I know which colleges accept my SAT or ACT score? +
Use our SAT Score Tracker or ACT Score Matcher — both sort colleges by the middle 50% score range (25th–75th percentile) for admitted students. A school is a “match” if your score falls within that range, a “reach” if it falls below the 25th percentile, and a “safety” if it falls above the 75th percentile. We cover all 6,000+ US colleges with current 2025–26 averages sourced from the Common Data Set.
What does acceptance rate mean and how is it calculated? +
Acceptance rate is the percentage of applicants who receive an offer of admission. If 10,000 students apply and 2,000 are admitted, the acceptance rate is 20%. A lower acceptance rate generally means a more selective school. Colleges with an open admissions policy — such as most community colleges — have a 100% acceptance rate and admit all students who meet basic eligibility criteria.
How can College Portal’s counseling service help my application? +
Our counselors — including former Ivy League admissions officers — guide you through every step: building a strategic college list, developing your application narrative, coaching on all essays and supplements, managing your timeline and deadlines, and preparing for interviews. We support 5–10 applications per student and have helped thousands of applicants, from top performers to average achievers, gain admission to world-class universities.
