Domestic high school applicants don't submit an essay - they complete an admission exam in person during their required campus visit, alongside a Prospective Cadet Questionnaire, Health & Consent Form, physical exam, and immunization records. A family should book that visit explicitly around sitting the exam, not treat it as an optional tour, since the exam result feeds directly into the admission decision.

NMMI reports roughly a 95% acceptance rate to federal service academies for its sponsored Prep students, with Prep staff directly assisting with the specific academy's application and nomination process (including coordinating the DoDMERB physical). A student with a genuine service academy goal should apply to NMMI specifically as a Prep candidate, not as a general junior college applicant, since the nomination-assistance pipeline is the actual value, not the coursework alone.

Through the ECP, a cadet earns an associate's degree and commissions as a Second Lieutenant in two years instead of the usual four, then has up to 36 months to finish a bachelor's degree elsewhere using Educational Assistance Program benefits (full tuition or up to $10,000-$12,000 toward room and board). This only makes sense for a student who wants to accelerate into a commission specifically - it changes the entire four-year college plan, so it needs to be chosen deliberately, not discovered after enrollment.

New Mexico residents can attend tuition-free through the General Richard T. Knowles Legislative Scholarship, which covers the remaining balance after other aid is applied - but it requires its own Legislative Scholarship application and a minimum 2.0 GPA (maintained with a "C" or better in deportation/corps grade for returning cadets). This is a distinct filing from the admissions application and should be submitted at the same time, not assumed to be automatic for NM residents.
