Oregon State University (OSU) Acceptance Rate, GPA, and Admission Requirements

Oregon State requires a personal essay (personal statement) as part of every first-year application, whether submitted through Common App or the OSU portal. Test scores are optional and rarely submitted (only 10% of enrolled students submitted SAT scores in 2024-25; 4% submitted ACT scores), meaning that for the vast majority of the applicant pool, the essay is the primary vehicle for conveying who you are beyond GPA and course rigor. OSU's holistic review considers academic performance in the context of your school environment, extracurricular involvement, personal qualities, and contributions to community diversity - the essay is where you connect those elements into a coherent narrative. Recommendations are not required but are considered if submitted. The application fee is $0 (Oregon State does not charge an application fee for first-year domestic applicants). Early Action deadline is November 3; the priority deadline is February 2, 2026. Applications submitted after the priority deadline are considered on a space-available basis with decision timelines extending into mid-March.

Oregon State holds Land-Grant, Sea-Grant, Space-Grant, and Sun-Grant designations simultaneously - one of only two or three universities in the US with all four. The HC does not accept letters of recommendation. Admission is holistic and competitive; while the HC values academic achievement, it explicitly defines achievement broadly to include coursework, extracurriculars, community service, and the quality of your short-answer responses. Honors College students receive small seminars, priority registration, a faculty thesis mentor, and unique funding for research and study abroad - and they pay an additional Honors College differential tuition each term. Apply to the HC at the same time as your general OSU application, not after receiving a general admission offer.

Starting with students applying for Summer 2025 entry and beyond, OSU added a new foreign language admission requirement: applicants must have completed two years of high school-level foreign language with a C- or better average in each year from a regionally accredited or public school. Students who don't meet this requirement can still be admitted but will be required to complete two terms of the same foreign language at OSU as part of graduation requirements. This is a meaningful new hurdle for homeschooled students, applicants from unaccredited schools, or those with non-standard transcripts. Separately, OSU charges a $0 application fee for domestic first-year applicants - a structural advantage when building a college list. OSU also awards more than $20 million in merit-based scholarships annually to newly admitted undergraduates; the ScholarDollars portal covers most awards, with a February 15, 2026 deadline for the 2025-26 incoming cohort.
