Southern was the first community college in West Virginia to launch WVU's Degree Up program: students admitted and enrolled at Southern in good standing get automatic admission into the WVU System - Morgantown, WVU Tech, Potomac State, and WVU Online - with no separate WVU application and no admissions fee. For a student whose real goal is a WVU bachelor's degree, framing two years at Southern as the planned first half of that path (not a consolation prize) can save real money while keeping the door open.

Unlike Southern's general open admissions, Allied Health and Nursing programs admit only once per year for a fall start, with applications open specifically October through February. A student who assumes they can apply "whenever" the way they would for general enrollment can miss the entire cycle and lose a full year - get health-science-track students applying the moment the October window opens.
