Alverno College Acceptance Rate, GPA, and Admission Requirements

Alverno grades on six sophistication levels across eight core abilities (communication, analysis, problem solving, valuing in decision making, social interaction, developing a global perspective, effective citizenship, aesthetic engagement) rather than traditional letter grades, and every course requires students to "contract" to advance specific abilities at its outset. Counsel prospective students (and especially transfer students used to GPA-based systems) to expect narrative evaluation and portfolio-style assessment rather than exams-and-letter-grades, and to specifically ask their admissions counselor for a sample syllabus or ability-contract example before enrolling, since this structural difference is the single most common adjustment shock for new students.

Following a June 2024 financial exigency declaration, Alverno reduced its undergraduate majors from 43 to 29, concentrating on reputational strengths including Nursing, Education, Psychology, Social Work, Business, Communication, Sciences, and Integrated Studies; the Higher Learning Commission removed Alverno's "financial distress" designation by December 2024 following a $10 million gift and additional fundraising. Counsel any student interested in a specific major to verify it's still offered under the current 29-major structure directly with admissions before applying, since older program lists (pre-2024) may reference majors that no longer exist.

Alverno participates in a course-to-course agreement with all 16 Wisconsin Technical Colleges covering 14 specific courses that satisfy general education or degree requirements when applicable - a defined, named agreement distinct from generic transfer credit evaluation. Counsel WTCS transfer students to specifically ask their community/technical college advisor which of the 14 named courses they've completed or should complete before transferring, rather than assuming all technical college coursework transfers at Alverno's discretion.

Alverno's official policy states it admits students who "consistently live and identify as women," including students who identify as female regardless of biological sex, and female students who identify as non-binary or gender non-conforming - with an optional gender identity disclosure item on the application and no medical documentation required. Counsel transgender or non-binary applicants with questions about eligibility to review this specific policy language directly with admissions, since it differs from a simple binary sex-based admission criterion.
