Musicians Institute Acceptance Rate, GPA, and Admission Requirements

MI's admissions process is built around demonstrated musical ability, not your GPA or test scores, which aren't required. For performance programs - guitar, bass, drums, keyboard, vocals - you'll submit a live or recorded audition showcasing your current technical level. For production and industry programs - audio engineering, electronic music production, music business - you submit a portfolio of work instead. The personal statement is approximately 250 words explaining your choice of MI and musical goals. Because rolling admissions runs year-round across four quarterly start dates (the next fall term begins October 2026), your timeline is flexible, but scholarship priority deadlines exist - the regular priority deadline for fall 2026 was April 30, 2026, with rolling admissions continuing through September 25.

MI holds programmatic accreditation from the National Association of Schools of Music (NASM) - the gold standard for music schools - but does not hold regional accreditation from WASC (the Western Association of Schools and Colleges). This distinction matters practically: credits earned at MI may not transfer to regionally accredited universities. To complete the liberal arts portion of its Bachelor of Music degree, MI has a formal partnership with nearby Los Angeles City College (LACC), where students take English, math, and science coursework that is regionally accredited. Know this before you enroll, especially if there's any chance you'd want to transfer out or continue to graduate school elsewhere.

All entering performance students are automatically considered for merit scholarships during the admissions review, and if selected, the award letter comes with your acceptance packet. But if you're not automatically selected, there's a separate online scholarship application process for named awards: the Artist Producer Entrepreneur Scholarship ($1,000?$2,000 per term), the Audio Engineering & Studio Recording Scholarship ($500?$2,000 per term), and others. But median earnings for MI graduates six years after enrollment are reported at around $24,962, significantly below the national median. Music careers are typically non-linear, highly variable, and often built over many years, so aggregate median data understates the trajectory of successful alumni.
