Coalinga's signature Psychiatric Technician program trains students for licensure through clinical rotations at Coalinga State Hospital - a secure forensic psychiatric facility treating sexually violent predators and other conservatees under civil commitment - and Porterville Developmental Center. Because of this, admission requires a passed physical, background check, and drug screen, and applicants are strongly advised to already hold an active California CNA certification. Start these steps months ahead of application, since a clean background check and CNA certification both take real lead time most applicants underestimate.

Unlike most California community colleges, Coalinga offers apartment-style on-campus housing (with cable, internet, and a game room) - a genuinely rare feature at this level. Housing runs on its own application track separate from academic admission, so a student who wants the residential experience should apply for housing as soon as they're admitted rather than assuming a dorm spot follows automatically from enrollment.

If you're a current high school student, apply through the California College and Career Access Pathways (CCAP) program rather than standard special admission - CCAP sections are closed cohorts held at your high school (capped at 4 courses/15 units per semester) and come with fee exemptions that general part-time special-admission students (capped at 11 units and not automatically fee-exempt) don't receive.
