Berklee College of Music (Berklee School of Music) Acceptance Rate, GPA, and Admission Requirements

Berklee does not accept the Common App. It does not require essays, personal statements, or SAT/ACT scores. The primary determinant of both admission and merit scholarship for the Bachelor of Music is the live or online audition - a 15-minute performance followed by a 15-minute interview, evaluated by Berklee faculty on four dimensions: prepared piece, improvisation, sight-reading, and ear training. Admissions and scholarship consideration are explicitly weighted identically whether the audition is completed in person in Boston, at a regional site globally, or fully online. A student who focuses on polishing their personal statement while neglecting ear training drills is preparing for the wrong thing. The audition is everything.

Berklee's application fee is $150, but applicants who apply for the fall semester by November 1 receive a 50% discount, making the effective fee $75. Early Action applicants receive notifications by January 31; Regular Action applicants receive notifications by March 31. Because Berklee's audition process is operationally complex - slots fill on a first-come, first-served basis, and failure to confirm a scheduled audition slot results in withdrawal of the application - applying early is not merely financially advantageous but logistically necessary. Some regional audition locations and online slots book out weeks in advance, so students who apply in January are choosing from a narrower set of audition dates.

Berklee's faculty evaluate each audition on four components: the prepared piece (any style), improvisation, sight-reading, and ear training. Berklee explicitly states it recognizes imbalances across these dimensions and is evaluating both current level and potential for growth - a student who plays flawlessly but cannot ear-train is a different admissions profile than a strong ear with modest technical execution. The strategic implication is that students should diagnose their specific weaknesses across all four areas and target practice accordingly rather than simply polishing the prepared piece, which most students already do well. Sight-reading and ear training, which most students underinvest in, carry real weight and often reveal the ceiling of a student's musicianship more clearly than a prepared piece can.

Bachelor of Arts applicants (music industry leadership and innovation program) are not required to audition and do not complete a live performance evaluation. Instead, they complete an online interview through the Kira Talent platform, respond to video prompts about their motivation and preparation for a music business career, and submit a portfolio containing a r?sum?/CV and a one-page cover letter. No essay or personal statement is required. Students interested in the business, technology, or management side of the music industry who are not primarily instrumentalists or vocalists should apply to the BA program - where the evaluation criteria are entirely different - rather than forcing themselves into the BM audition track where their application will be compared against performing musicians.
