FIT's portfolio requirement applies specifically and only to School of Art and Design majors and the Film and Media program - Baker School of Business and Technology applicants submit no portfolio at all, and materials submitted for the wrong major category won't be reviewed. Unlike many portfolio schools, FIT does not accept portfolio materials submitted alongside the initial application; students only gain SlideRoom access after their SUNY application is received and processed, then receive major-specific requirements and a $10 SlideRoom submission fee. Build in buffer time for this sequential process rather than assuming portfolio and application happen simultaneously, and double-check the selected major and entry term before paying, since FIT does not refund SlideRoom fees for misselections.

FIT does not require letters of recommendation for admission - a genuine structural difference from most comparably selective schools - which means the personal essay carries more relative weight in conveying who a student is beyond grades and portfolio.
