Excelsior's associate nursing program requires an active LPN/LVN license, paramedic certification, or equivalent qualifying military medical training, PLUS 200+ hours of direct-patient-care employment in the prior calendar year and a passing TEAS score (with official ATI score reports needing to be dated within one year of application as of Jan. 1, 2026) - there's no traditional GPA-based admission decision at all. A prospective student without one of these specific credentials should know upfront that Excelsior's nursing pathway isn't accessible to them yet, regardless of academic strength, until they obtain the qualifying license or certification elsewhere first.

Excelsior's competency-based model lets students test out of courses via Excelsior College Examinations (backed by ACE recommendations) rather than sitting through traditional coursework - but Anatomy & Physiology and Microbiology specifically must have been completed (by any method) no more than 5 years prior to the academic policy date for nursing-track students. An adult learner with older science coursework should verify this currency window before assuming prior credits will count, since otherwise-strong academic history can still require a retake purely due to its age.

Excelsior offers RN-to-BS, RN-to-MS in Nursing Education, RN-to-MS in Nursing Informatics, and RN-to-MS in Nursing Leadership dual-degree tracks that let an already-licensed RN move straight into combined bachelor's-and-master's coursework - a meaningfully different, faster pathway than completing the AAS first and reapplying separately later. A working RN with a specific career-advancement goal (education, informatics, leadership) should identify the matching dual-degree track upfront rather than defaulting to a standalone BSN.

Excelsior's nursing catalog explicitly states there is no clinical instruction provided in any nursing program at the associate level, and students without an existing nursing license are prohibited from performing many clinical activities in their usual workplace because of how state Nurse Practice Act exemptions are written - meaning Excelsior's competency-based model depends entirely on a student's existing supervised clinical work setting, not on Excelsior providing it. A student without daily hands-on patient-care access in their current job is a poor fit for this specific program, regardless of academic readiness.
