Carl Sandburg College Acceptance Rate, GPA, and Admission Requirements

General admission to Sandburg is open and free, but the college's most distinctive majors - Dental Hygiene, Mortuary Science, Nursing (RN), and Radiologic Technology - are Limited Enrollment Programs with their own separate applications, $50 fees, and rigid windows (e.g., dental hygiene applications run Oct. 1-March 16 for fall entry only). Counsel students toward these programs at least a full year out, since missing the single annual window means waiting an entire year to reapply.

Dental hygiene admission is explicitly scored against a published points worksheet with a minimum of 23 points required, and only 30 seats exist per year, with specific seats reserved for residents of Sandburg's own district plus four partner community college districts (Spoon River, Black Hawk, Southeastern, and Eastern Iowa). A student from outside those reserved districts is competing for a smaller remaining pool, so out-of-district applicants should know their odds are structurally different before building a plan around this program.

Sandburg is one of only a handful of Illinois schools offering both a two-year and an accelerated mortuary science AAS, but admission requires submitted proof of an interview with a licensed funeral director - a real industry-connection requirement that rewards students who've already built a relationship with a local funeral home before applying, rather than scrambling to find one after the application opens.

The RN and LPN-to-RN nursing applications require a TEAS test score or valid SAT/ACT score, and admission is competitive and points-based - but Sandburg offers a free internal prep program specifically for the TEAS that most applicants never hear about unless a counselor points them to it, making it a genuine low-cost way to boost a borderline application before the application window closes.
