West Virginia University (WVU) Acceptance Rate, GPA, and Admission Requirements

WVU superscores both the ACT and SAT across multiple test dates for admission, Honors College eligibility, and scholarships - and because the ACT's science section became optional for online testing in April 2025, WVU now calculates two separate superscores for ACT submitters (one including science, one without) and automatically uses whichever is higher. A student who tested well except for a weak science subscore should know this isn't a liability under WVU's policy - the better of the two calculated superscores is used regardless, so there's no strategic reason to withhold a strong overall test history over one weak section.

WVU's School of Nursing requires an ACT, SAT, or TEAS score specifically to be placed into the Direct Admit track (test-optional applicants are routed to Pre-Nursing or Health and Well-Being instead, regardless of GPA), and Direct Admit seats are awarded by the date a student's academic deposit is submitted until capacity is reached - after which qualified applicants go onto a waitlist and into Pre-Nursing instead. A family that only checks GPA/test-score thresholds, without understanding that deposit timing determines the actual remaining seats, can do everything academically right and still get waitlisted simply by depositing late; the priority application deadline is December 1 for the Morgantown campus.

To maintain Direct Admit standing, a student must hit a 3.0 overall GPA by the end of fall semester and a 3.5 overall GPA by the end of spring semester of freshman year, plus complete all prerequisite courses with a C or better - falling short doesn't mean dismissal from nursing outright, but it can mean retaking courses in summer term or starting sophomore nursing coursework a semester later than planned (turning a 4-year into a 4.5-year program). Build the freshman-year course plan and tutoring support around these two specific checkpoints rather than a single end-of-year GPA target.

Students invited through test-based criteria receive an invitation for a streamlined application with one short essay, reviewed on a rolling basis with a decision in 5-7 business days; students invited through the test-blind, GPA-based pathway instead complete an "extended application" reviewed in four set cycles rather than rolling, with more material required. A student who qualifies for test-based admission shouldn't assume the extended-application timeline and requirements apply to them, and vice versa - check which invitation actually arrived before building an Honors application plan.
