New College of Florida Acceptance Rate, GPA, and Admission Requirements

New College of Florida is open, accredited, and enrolling students - but if you researched it before early 2023, the institution you found has been substantially transformed. In January 2023, Governor DeSantis replaced the Board of Trustees with conservative appointees who fired the sitting president, dissolved the diversity office, and declared intent to remake the college as a conservative institution modeled on Hillsdale College. Approximately 40% of the faculty resigned. The college now has different curricular emphases, different campus culture, a new intercollegiate athletics program (launched from scratch), and different leadership. The contract system and thesis requirement remain structurally in place, but the faculty who built the programs many prospective students researched are largely gone. Research the current institution - not the 2022 version - before applying.

New College uses the Common App with no supplemental essays beyond the standard personal statement - but its admissions office explicitly states that essays are the most heavily weighted factor after course selection. The college is described as "very writing-intensive," and the admissions committee is looking for students who can articulate why they want to take responsibility for their own education. SAT, ACT, or the CLT (Classical Learning Test, which the new administration has added as an option) are required. There is no application fee. EA deadline is November 1; Regular Decision runs through July 1 with rolling review. In-state tuition is $6,916; out-of-state $29,944 - making it among the least expensive honors-model public colleges for Florida residents when paired with the scholarship guarantees it offers.

Whatever the political and cultural changes since 2023, the academic contract system - in which students negotiate semester-long learning agreements with faculty sponsors rather than registering for a conventional course load - and the senior thesis requirement remain in place as of the 2025-26 catalog. Students who want the structural features of a self-directed, writing-intensive, small-cohort public honors experience can still find those at NCF. The class sizes remain small (83% under 20 students), the 8:1 student-faculty ratio is intact, and the Independent Study Project (ISP) term between semesters remains a graduation requirement. Whether the faculty available to sponsor those contracts reflect the depth and range available before 2023 is a legitimate question to research directly - ask admissions for current faculty rosters in your area of interest.

The unusually sharp divergence between the pre-2023 and post-2023 institution - and the ongoing political prominence of NCF in debates about higher education - means that the information environment around it is noisier than for almost any other small public college in the country. Alumni reviews, news coverage, and ranking data are all bifurcated by which era they reflect. The only reliable way to know whether the current NCF is the right environment for a specific student is to visit campus and have direct conversations with enrolled students and current faculty. NCF's enrollment has rebounded numerically (from 732 in 2023-24 to 881 in 2024-25, aided by substantially increased scholarship spending), but retention and ranking trajectory since the transformation deserve direct inquiry. Request current retention and graduation data directly from the admissions office, not from pre-2023 sources.
