The Kern Promise is Bakersfield College's structured commitment to help first-time college students complete an Associate Degree for Transfer (ADT) within two years and transfer to a California State University campus with guaranteed junior standing. Benefits include priority registration (which fills sections in high-demand programs before the general population registers), a $250 book scholarship per semester, and tuition coverage. The program has two tracks: Transfer-in-2 (guaranteed CSU transfer in 2 years) and Finish-in-4 (guaranteed CSUB admission + junior standing for a complete 4-year degree). The 2026 cohort interest form opened January 1, 2026 and closes July 1, 2026. Critically: only incoming first-time college students can join - transfer students are not eligible. Students who took dual or concurrent enrollment classes in high school ARE still eligible. Apply for Kern Promise as part of your first-semester enrollment, not after you've settled in.

Bakersfield College offers four general education pathways - CalGETC, IGETC, CSU Breadth, and BC General Education - and the one you choose in your first semester shapes every course you take for two years. CalGETC is the unified pathway that simultaneously satisfies both CSU and UC lower-division GE requirements, making it the most flexible option for students who haven't yet decided between a UC and a CSU transfer destination. IGETC is specifically optimized for UC transfers and some private universities. CSU Breadth is optimized for CSU transfers. Choosing the wrong pattern in your first semester often means taking courses you don't need or missing courses you do - extending your time at BC beyond the two-year ADT target. Meet with a counselor in your first two weeks, confirm your transfer destination and likely major, and lock in your GE pattern before you register.

Bakersfield College's Rising Scholars Program operates in five California state prisons and two juvenile hall facilities in Kern and Kings counties - one of the most extensive correctional education programs at any California community college. Students inside those facilities can earn ADTs including Administration of Justice while incarcerated, and transition to BC's main campus with continued support through the custody-to-community reentry program. For formerly incarcerated students now on BC's main campus, Rising Scholars provides academic guidance, advising, and a peer community. For prospective students who are themselves formerly incarcerated or who are interested in criminal justice, social work, or education careers that intersect with this population, BC's infrastructure in this space is more developed than almost any other community college in the Central Valley.

While at Bakersfield College, you can take one CSU Bakersfield course per semester through CSUB's Concurrent Enrollment Program at deeply discounted tuition rates - a direct preview of upper-division coursework that can help you confirm your intended major and build a relationship with CSUB faculty before you transfer. Separately, BC has a UC Berkeley Community College Transfer Services (CCTS) advisor on-site who provides individual advising, classroom presentations, and workshops specifically for students aiming for UC campuses. In 2023-24, 68 BC students transferred to UC campuses. These are not mutually exclusive paths - a student can use concurrent enrollment to confirm a CSU path while simultaneously working with the CCTS advisor to keep UC options open.
