California State University-Fullerton (Cal State Fullerton) Acceptance Rate, GPA, and Admission Requirements

Cal State Fullerton is one of only five CSU campuses that remain fully campus-impacted for 2027-28 - meaning every undergraduate program, every pre-program, and undeclared/undecided status is impacted for both first-time freshmen and upper-division transfer students. The other four are CSU San Diego, CSU Long Beach, CSU San Luis Obispo, and CSU San Jose. This is critically different from most CSU campuses, where impaction affects only a handful of programs. At CSUF, impaction means two things in practice: first, that students must meet the CSU minimum eligibility requirements AND the CSUF-specific supplemental criteria (higher GPA thresholds, priority given to local area applicants); and second, that applying to an alternate major as a backup genuinely matters, because your intended major may not have space even if you are CSU-eligible. The overall acceptance rate of approximately 90% reflects the total applicant pool against total admitted students, but impacted programs can be meaningfully more competitive than this figure suggests. CSUF does not use the Common App, does not use the Coalition App, and does not have its own institutional essay prompts. The Cal State Apply platform (the CSU system application) includes Personal Insight Questions (PIQs): you choose 4 from a list of 8 prompts and write up to 350 words on each. The PIQs are the only written narrative component in your application - there are no supplemental essays, no letters of recommendation, and no class rank considered at CSUF. The CSU system developed the PIQs to capture what standardized tests and GPAs can't: your background, character, and the context behind your academic record. Prompts include: one thing that would surprise people about you, a meaningful challenge and how you overcame it, a talent or skill you've developed, an educational opportunity or barrier you've faced, and similar reflective questions. The CSU application window for Fall 2026 was October 1 through December 1, 2025. As a fully impacted campus, CSUF gives priority admission to applicants from its local area (students from high schools in Orange County and designated Los Angeles and Riverside County school districts). Non-local applicants are admitted on a space-available basis after local area applicants have been considered - this is a structural priority, not just a soft preference. Non-local applicants who do not apply by the December 1 deadline, or who list another CSU as their first-choice campus, may find themselves effectively de-prioritized in the CSUF admissions cycle. The $70 application fee applies per campus (you can apply to multiple CSU campuses through the same Cal State Apply account). Submitting early within the October 1 to December 1 window - closer to October 1 than December 1 - gives admissions more time to process your file and request any missing documentation before the pool closes.

CSUF's Mihaylo College of Business and Economics is one of only five California universities that holds AACSB accreditation in both business and accounting - the dual accreditation standard that places it alongside institutions with far higher sticker-price tuitions.
