Modesto Junior College Acceptance Rate, GPA, and Admission Requirements

Modesto Junior College is one of the few California community colleges with a functioning on-campus agricultural operation that students actively manage: the West Campus agricultural units include over 100 acres of crops and six large-scale agricultural production areas, plus seven on-campus housing units for students enrolled in the ag internship program. Students in the agriculture internship program live on the West Campus during their enrollment - a genuinely unusual option for a community college - and gain hands-on production experience alongside academic coursework in animal science, crop science, agricultural mechanics, environmental science in agriculture, and more. With 30 agriculture-specific associate degrees and certificates, MJC serves as the primary higher education pathway for the farming and agribusiness workforce in California's Central Valley, which produces over 25% of U.S. food supply. For students from agricultural backgrounds who want to remain regionally rooted while earning a transferable credential, the agriculture housing option and built-in industry network are structurally unavailable at most California community colleges.

MJC students are eligible for UC Transfer Admission Guarantees at six campuses: UC Davis, UC Irvine, UC Merced, UC Riverside, UC Santa Barbara, and UC Santa Cruz. The TAG application opens September 1 and closes September 30 each year for students planning to transfer the following fall - a full year before arrival. Students must have completed at least 30 UC-transferable semester units (MJC is a semester school) and meet campus-specific GPA thresholds to be eligible. Only one TAG application per student per cycle - campus selection is a one-shot decision and cannot be revised after submission. UC Davis and UC Merced are particularly strong TAG destinations for MJC students in agricultural sciences, biological sciences, and environmental science; MJC's specific course offerings in Ag Environmental Science and Ag Mechanics align closely to UC Davis College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences' lower-division expectations. UC Berkeley and UCLA do not participate in TAG under any circumstances.

MJC offers a Bachelor of Science in Respiratory Care - one of California's authorized community college bachelor's degree programs - delivered in an accelerated 15-month, fully online, eight-week course format. This is not a transfer pathway; it is a full bachelor's degree earned at MJC on a CoARC provisionally accredited program. A critical structural gate that is rarely communicated clearly: applications for the BS program are accepted ONLY from students currently enrolled in MJC's Respiratory Care AAS program during the designated application period. The program uses a lottery selection process for admission - not a GPA or merit ranking - among eligible applicants. Students should also be aware that applying for the BS degree may affect their financial aid eligibility, and the Student Financial Services Office must be consulted before submission. Additionally, the program requires completion of the Cal-GETC transfer pattern (39 CSU-GE transferable units) as a lower-division requirement, meaning students must also complete college-level general education as part of the 120-unit degree.

MJC's Program Pathways Mapper (programmap.mjc.edu) generates a term-by-term, semester-by-semester course sequence for each of MJC's programs - showing students exactly which course to take in each of their four semesters and linking each to degree requirements and transfer preparation. This is one of the most specific transfer-planning tools available at any California CCC, and students who use it in the first week of enrollment arrive at counseling appointments with a concrete plan rather than a blank slate. MJC's 30+ ADTs (AA-T and AS-T degrees) follow a fixed Cal-GETC + major preparation formula for each discipline. Cal-GETC replaced IGETC as the required GE certification pattern for all new students effective Fall 2025; students enrolled before Fall 2025 should verify their catalog year with a counselor to confirm whether their prior IGETC coursework still applies or whether they need to transition to Cal-GETC under a different course pattern.
