The University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA) Acceptance Rate, GPA, and Admission Requirements

UTSA's freshman admission operates on two tracks determined by your high school class rank and test scores. Students in the top 10% of their Texas high school graduating class receive automatic admission under the Texas HB 588 guaranteed admission law. Students who rank in the 11th percentile or below but meet minimum eligibility thresholds (generally top 50% class rank, OR SAT 1010+/ACT 19+ with a 2.0+ GPA, or graduating from an unranked high school) enter holistic review. If you are in holistic review, the admissions page explicitly states that Essay A from ApplyTexas or any open prompt from Common App is "highly encouraged," along with two letters of recommendation. These are not required in the way a supplemental essay would be at a selective school, but submitting them meaningfully strengthens your file relative to the large pool of holistic applicants. UTSA also does not accept superscore reports - full, complete score reports from the testing agency are required if you submit scores, so plan your score-reporting accordingly.

UT System's Coordinated Admission Program (CAP) places students who are not admitted to UT Austin but rank in the top 50% of their high school graduating class into a guaranteed pathway: complete your first year at a participating UT System institution with a 3.2 GPA, and you earn guaranteed admission to UT Austin as a transfer student. UTSA is one of the official CAP host institutions and accepts CAP students starting in the summer (required). CAP students must meet TSI requirements, take a specific course-taking pattern including a CAP course, and maintain the 3.2 GPA standard. If you are admitted to UTSA through CAP, you are not eligible for UTSA's Distinguished Presidential Scholarship, but general scholarships administered by UTSA colleges and departments remain available. Apply to UTSA as a CAP student with your CAP agreement (pay the $75 processing fee by May 1) and register for the earliest available summer start to maximize your year-one study time before the UT Austin transfer review.

UTSA is designated as a Hispanic-Serving Institution (HSI) with 55% of its student body identifying as Hispanic - and it is one of only 21 institutions nationwide that holds both HSI status and an R1 (very high research activity) Carnegie classification simultaneously. This combination is significant: it means UTSA's resources, research infrastructure, and federal funding reflect a flagship research university mission while actively serving a predominantly Hispanic student population in the seventh-largest US city. UTSA's signature research areas - health, energy, security, sustainability, and human and social development - are directly tied to San Antonio's economy and community needs, including its substantial military and defense sector (home to multiple major US military installations including Fort Sam Houston, Lackland AFB, and Randolph AFB). Students whose research interests, service backgrounds, or career goals connect to any of these sectors should name those connections explicitly in any essay or holistic review materials.

UTSA's priority scholarship deadline is January 15 for fall enrollment - the Distinguished Presidential Scholarship and other need-based and merit awards administered by the university require a completed application by that date. CAP students who miss the January 15 deadline are ineligible for the Distinguished Presidential Scholarship. UTSA has multiple campuses: the main campus (northwest San Antonio), the Downtown Campus, Hemisfair, Park West, and Southwest locations. Downtown Campus serves students in health, business, and public policy programs close to San Antonio's urban core. If you are applying to a specific program, verify which campus that program's coursework occurs on - commuting implications differ substantially between a northwest suburban campus and a downtown location. The application fee is $65 and the fall priority deadline is approximately February 1, with rolling admissions thereafter on a space-available basis.
