Southwestern College (Southwestern Community College District) Acceptance Rate, GPA, and Admission Requirements

Southwestern College has open admissions: high school diploma, GED, or being 18 or older and able to benefit from instruction is all that is required. Apply online through CCCApply.org at no cost, no GPA minimum, no SAT or ACT. After submitting, you will receive your student ID number and registration steps by email. But open admissions means the meaningful planning begins after you enroll, not before: which courses you take in your first semester will either serve or undermine your transfer goals for the next two years. If your goal is UCSD, the UniversityLink transfer admission guarantee program (between Southwestern and UC San Diego specifically) has its own eligibility requirements, timeline, and conditions that you need to understand in your first semester - not your last. If your goal is SDSU, CSUF, or another CSU, the Associate Degree for Transfer (ADT) is the vehicle, and the ADT must be in the right major. Book a counseling appointment before or immediately after registration opens.

UC San Diego participates in a transfer admission guarantee program called UniversityLink with Southwestern College and a small number of other local partner community colleges. Students who meet UniversityLink eligibility requirements - completing specified coursework, maintaining required GPA thresholds, and following the program's timelines - receive guaranteed admission to UC San Diego as transfer students. This is distinct from UC TAG (which covers six other UC campuses but explicitly excludes UCLA and UC Berkeley) and distinct from the CSU Transfer Success Pathway. For students whose goal is UCSD specifically, UniversityLink at Southwestern is one of the most direct pathways available in Southern California. Separately, UC TAG contracts are available through Southwestern for UC Davis, UC Irvine, UC Merced, UC Riverside, UC Santa Barbara, and UC Santa Cruz. Through a formal partnership with Point Loma Nazarene University (PLNU), Southwestern College students who complete an associate degree can earn a PLNU bachelor's degree in Nursing, Criminal Justice, Management and Relational Development, or Child and Adolescent Development without leaving the Chula Vista campus. PLNU instruction happens on the Southwestern campus through the University Center in the Instructional Discovery Complex (IDC), reducing the cost and commuting barrier of attending PLNU's Point Loma campus in San Diego proper. SWC students and employees also receive a tuition discount on PLNU programs. This arrangement is particularly significant for nursing-track students: completing the associate-level nursing program at Southwestern and continuing directly to the PLNU BSN without relocating is one of the cleaner pathways to a BSN in South San Diego County. Confirm current program offerings and eligibility directly with the University Center (swccd.edu/programs-and-academics/university-center) before making enrollment decisions.

Southwestern College's five locations are not interchangeable general education sites - each has a distinct program focus tied to its geography. The main Chula Vista campus (156 acres, corner of Otay Lakes Road and H Street) houses the University Center, general education, transfer programs, and arts. The Otay Mesa campus, located minutes from the US-Mexico border, is where the Police Academy, Nursing, Fire Science Technology, Paramedic, and Emergency Medical Technician programs are based. The San Ysidro campus, at the border itself, offers community-focused coursework including Family Studies programs running Monday through Saturday, days and evenings. National City campus serves the northern part of the district. Crown Cove Aquatic Center (partnership with California State Parks and California Boating and Waterways) offers courses in kayaking, canoeing, sailing, stand-up paddling, and surfing - making Southwestern one of the few community colleges in the US where water sports instruction is a for-credit campus program. If you're applying for Nursing, Fire Science, Paramedic, or EMT, your home campus is Otay Mesa, not Chula Vista.
