Oakland University (OU) Acceptance Rate, GPA, and Admission Requirements

Oakland University is among the largest nursing producers in Michigan, graduating more than 600 nurses annually with clinical partnerships at Beaumont Health, Henry Ford Health System, and other major Michigan health systems. For freshman applicants, direct admission consideration to the BSN program requires applying by January 5 of the senior year in high school. This is a hard programmatic deadline - not the general university scholarship deadline - and students who apply after January 5 may still be considered for nursing on a space-available basis, but are not receiving direct admission priority review. OU's admissions page is explicit: "apply by January 5 of your senior year in high school" for direct admission consideration. Students interested in nursing should apply as early as October of their senior year to ensure their application is complete and reviewed in the direct admission pool before January 5. Transferring into the nursing program after enrolling at OU in a different major is possible but not guaranteed; students should verify current internal transfer processes with the School of Nursing directly before planning on that route.

OU's most prestigious scholarship - the Pescovitz Presidential Scholarship, which covers full tuition for four years - is not a separate competitive application for all students. It is available only to incoming freshmen who have already been awarded the Platinum Presidential Scholar Award (OU's highest automatic merit tier) and who enroll in the Young Donna and Walt Honors College. The process is sequential: first, earn Platinum status through the automatic merit award evaluation (requiring the highest GPA/test-score combination at the time of admission, reviewed at the March 1 priority scholarship deadline); then, if Platinum, apply for the Pescovitz Presidential Scholarship through the Honors College. The Pescovitz award doubled in 2024 from 4 to 8 recipients annually due to a $1.33 million gift from President Ora Hirsch Pescovitz. Scholarship awards are based on academic record at the time of admission; students may submit updated transcripts and test scores for scholarship reconsideration before March 1. Test superscores are not considered - OU uses the single highest composite ACT or highest SAT total from a single sitting.

Oakland University is permanently test-optional: ACT and SAT scores are not required for admission or for any scholarship consideration. However, submitting strong scores can increase a student's automatic merit scholarship tier. OU's merit awards are based on GPA and (if submitted) test scores at the time of admission review, and the automatic scholarship grid has tiers where the combination of a 3.5+ GPA and a 28+ ACT - for example - may produce a higher award than GPA alone would generate. OU's own admissions page states: "Students are not precluded from taking standardized tests and sending scores if they are able. Doing so can support their institutional scholarship eligibility." OU explicitly notes that test scores will "never negatively impact admission or scholarship consideration" - there is no downside to submitting strong scores. The practical counseling implication: students with a 3.5+ GPA and a 26?30 ACT should submit scores to maximize their automatic merit tier; students with scores below their GPA band should omit them, since they cannot reduce scholarship consideration and only add unnecessary noise to the review.

Oakland University participates in the Michigan Assured Admission Pact (MAAP), a statewide compact among Michigan public universities guaranteeing admission to all Michigan high school graduates with a cumulative 3.0 or higher GPA applying for their first fall semester after high school graduation. For counselors with Michigan students in the 3.0?3.2 GPA range who are anxious about college admissions, MAAP provides a documented assurance from OU (and other participating Michigan institutions) that admission is guaranteed at that threshold - removing the uncertainty that often drives poor-fit school choice decisions. MAAP applies only to first-fall-semester applicants; students who take a gap year or defer, or who apply as transfer students, are not covered by the MAAP guarantee. MAAP does not guarantee admission to selective programs within OU (nursing, business honors, music/theatre audition-required programs) - those programs retain their own admission criteria on top of the university guarantee.
