California State University-Northridge (CSUN) Acceptance Rate, GPA, and Admission Requirements

For 2025-26, CSUN's overall acceptance rate is 93.45% (30,842 admitted of 33,005 applicants), making it near-open-access for most California applicants who meet the standard CSU eligibility requirements. Critically, CSUN also eliminated local/nonlocal area impaction for 2025-26 and 2026-27 - all California freshman applicants now meet the same standard criteria regardless of where they live. Cinema and Television Arts (CTVA) is CSUN's most industry-adjacent major, offering seven options including Film Production, Television Production, Screenwriting, Entertainment Media Management, Media Theory and Criticism, Emerging Media Production, and Animation/VFX. Two of these options - Film Production and Emerging Media Production - are impacted at CSUN for 2025-26, meaning admission to the general university does not guarantee entry to those specific tracks. Beyond impaction, the Film Production option has an additional internal barrier: to qualify for Film Production, students must earn required grades in designated prerequisite courses and then submit a portfolio for Faculty approval. On January 17, 1994, a 6.7 magnitude earthquake struck less than two miles from CSUN's campus, causing $400 million in damage - the most destructive earthquake impact ever sustained by an American college campus. All 100+ campus structures sustained some level of damage; several buildings including the South Library, University Tower apartments, and a parking structure were so severely damaged they were demolished and never rebuilt. Over the following decade, FEMA and the California Office of Emergency Services funded complete reconstruction, rebuilding or retrofitting every structure on the 353-acre campus.
