Villanova University Acceptance Rate, GPA, and Admission Requirements

Villanova requires one supplemental essay (approximately 250 words) chosen from five prompts, all of which are grounded in Augustinian Catholic identity: (A) How have you advocated for equity and justice, drawing from St. Augustine's statement that well-being concerns "my neighbor's good as well"? (B) What life lesson would you share with others at Villanova? (C) "Villanova" means "new home" - why do you want to call it yours? (D) As an Augustinian community, we value individuals for their true selves - share a time when you were misjudged based on your identity or background. (E) "Each of us strengthens all of us" - describe a time when someone borrowed your strength in their time of need. No prompt is preferred by admissions, but prompts A, C, and E provide the most direct alignment with Villanova's three core values of Veritas, Unitas, and Caritas (Truth, Unity, Love). Prompt C is the only explicit Why Villanova option - students who have done meaningful research and can name specific institutional resources should strongly consider it.

Villanova's ED acceptance rate is approximately 49?56% compared to an overall rate of approximately 27%. This is a ratio of roughly two to one - among the most pronounced ED advantages at any selective Catholic university in the country. Villanova offers EDI (November 1, binding, notification by mid-December) and EDII (January 15, binding, notification by mid-February), as well as Early Action (November 1, non-binding, notification by mid-December) and Regular Decision (January 15). Students for whom Villanova is a genuine first choice should apply EDI - the advantage is unambiguous. A key strategic distinction: Villanova's four-school structure means students apply to a specific school (Liberal Arts & Sciences, Business, Engineering, Nursing) within Villanova, not to a generic "Villanova" - and the Nursing school is substantially more selective than the others, with the lowest effective acceptance rate among the four.

The M. Louise Fitzpatrick College of Nursing is the most selective entry point at Villanova. Students note that transferring into Nursing after first-year entry is extremely difficult - almost impossible in practice. Students committed to nursing must apply directly to the Nursing college as their intended school. Nursing applicants compete in a pool that is more selective than the overall 27% institutional rate and should approach their application with test scores (if submitting) in the upper range, strong science coursework including AP Biology and Chemistry, and ideally some clinical or healthcare volunteer experience documented in the application. The supplemental essay for Nursing applicants is the same five-prompt single essay as for all schools - but prompt A (equity and justice) or E (strengthening others) with a healthcare-specific example is a natural anchor for Nursing candidates.

Villanova remains test-optional through the Class of 2030, but the data on how optional this truly is should be clearly understood. Among the Class of 2029, 54% of admitted students applied test-optional. Villanova superscores the SAT (takes highest section scores across test dates) but does not superscore the ACT. The mid-50% for submitters: SAT 1395?1510, ACT 32?34. For students at or above those ranges, submitting is almost always advisable - a strong score is an unambiguous positive signal at a school where GPA and curriculum rigor are rated "very important." For students whose scores fall meaningfully below the 25th percentile (SAT ~1395, ACT 32), going test-optional is the stronger strategic choice. The threshold is not "should I submit if my scores are good enough?" - it is "do my scores strengthen or weaken my overall file?"
